sugarbabies…

last night i spent about an hour writing about how i justify a $300. pair of blue jeans in an economic crisis…how i think that… those of us who are lucky enough to have the means to pay the price… cant afford NOT to buy them…mostly… because …the manufacturer is an artisan… their employees are paid a living wage…they source almost everything from within a 200 mile radius of their facility…..  including a heritage denim fabric manufacturer that has been in business over 100 years and where one of my great aunts used to work…and its all in my home state of NC…where i grew up… surrounded by artisans and textiles…and folks that love them…

generally speaking though folks in america dont want to pay for quality craftsmanship…they want things cheap… they want the instant gratification of a pressed faux wood Wal-Mart purchase as opposed to saving for an heirloom quality pass this on to your kids version…

conversely they will often overpay for what they perversely  perceive to be designer… it slays me…

designer used to mean it was hand crafted timeless and well done… not that it was slathered with gross logos…

but then i could go on and on about that…

happily it seems that with the growth of ETSY and similar sites access to more artisanal products has grown and so has awareness… there has been a much hyped in the media backlash against wal-mart … and its truly a heated argument with both sides having sound arguments (except maybe that whole wal-mart brings job things…we are not falling for that horseshit anymore) i think during hard times we all can agree that quality is a virtue worth paying for…while silly labels really aren’t…they never were…  and americans are starting to care again…people are buying fords again… and ford is making a pretty good product these days…

and i dont mean this to be preachy… i have a 19.00 pair of old navy jeans too… not everything needs to last for 100 years sometimes you just want a tshirt to wear to the gym… and there is a place for that… all i want to say is…that knowledge is power… and … i want to be an educated consumer… and if chick fil a wants to sponsor a meeting held by a bunch of folks that vehemently oppose gay marriage… (and thats putting it diplomatically) then i suppose thats their right… and its also my right to buy my chicken sandwich somewhere else…but who am i kidding…ill walk to my newlywed gaybors house and they will insist on making me a sandwich… and we all know that things made with love taste the best…

andddd then i looked down..realized i was typing the whole thing on my iPad …which is very decidedly made in china… in a plant where workers routinely throw themselves off the roof… and apple is supposed to be one of the the “good” guys…and i gave up a little…

baby steps america..baby steps..

xoxo

with nods to @budweiserpleas and @LAmeetsDC for both proving points last night in the great twitter debate of 2011…{i mock because i love..;)}

::edit:: chick-fil-a has had their name removed from the website as sponsors and is working on a press release… whatever… we all know your position…. is missionary….
