sugarbabies…

when the towers fell.. i walked over to the red cross…i joined a long line of folks to give blood… to say it was a sad gathering of souls … well…there are not words….

sooo when after a sweaty romp… i rolled over and turned on the tv… i saw the news scroll across the bottom of the screen.. and said… i wanna walk up to the white house… i pulled on pants and a sweater…leashed up alice…and we headed out…there were not  many folks there…we walked right up to the gate…took pics of groups of friends … i was feeling pretty somber…and think i just wanted to show our president…and our troops a bit of support…gratitude even…for fighting the good fight…

and really just to feel  a bit of solidarity with my fellow Americans…

i wasnt prepared…. i didnt have a flag to wave… bubbles to blow…balloons to toss up…

the crowd began to swell pretty quickly… foursquare alerted me when friends joined the melee …spontaneous choruses of the star spangled banner broke out..and  a few raucous party songs… na nah nah na  hey hey hey good bye… people were running to get there as fast as they could…they were pouring into Lafayette Park from every direction… to be honest it looked very much like what i imagine the beginning of a zombie apocalypse might look like…shadows running through the dark park… pressing against the wrought iron gates… the police fell back and let the revelers pop open their beer cans and coolers…and climb dangerously high into the trees and up the lamp posts… a flag was tied to a lacrosse stick… tv cameras were hoisted onto sticks for better crowd views… i stayed on the edge… which kept getting farther and farther away… finally alice gave up… she wanted me to hold her…the frantic energy the crowd had taken on was scaring her… we headed home…

i had contemplated a special bottle of Perrier-Jout on the bottom shelf under some happy colored easter eggs… but… no… i decided… im NOT celebrating his death…

and i wasnt…

he is/was irrelevant…its about US…about getting knocked down and standing back up…not giving up…

about  a commitment to freedom and justice… that is what is important…

and so im saving that bottle for when our boys/girls come home…

for when the celebration can be about life…

xoxo

i’m still standing… better than i ever did

looking like a true survivor… feeling like a little kid…

picking up the pieces of my life …

without you on my mind…

im still standing…
